What the difference between online and regular mail credit card applications?

Once you have decided that you are going to fill out some credit card applications, the next big step is trying to figure out whether or not you want to fill out online credit card applications or send them in by the regular mail.  A lot more people now days are sending them in online and that trend looks to continue.

Easily one of the biggest advantages of filling out credit card applications online rather than mailing them in is the fact that you do not have to wait for the Post Office to deliver the application before it starts to get processed.  When you fill them in online, the credit card applications start to be processed almost immediately.  This can save up to a week or so depending on what problems that piece of mail might go through when being delivered by the Post Office.  As with all regular mail, there is the possibility of it getting lost, delivered to the wrong place, returned to you due to wrong postage, or damaged and not being able to be processed at all.  When you complete it online and submit it, you know the credit card companies will be getting it right away.

Another benefit to applying with credit card applications online is the ability to easily research and compare different credit card offers online before deciding on which one is right for you.  Generally when you are applying through the old mail way, you are relying on some sort of offer that has been mailed to you or picking up an application form at your local bank.  I am not saying these offers are bad but you have nothing to compare them to.  These credit cards might not be suited to your needs.  Online, you are able to compare all the different credit card applications and offers from all the different banks and find that credit cards that will be best for you.  And you can do it all from the comfort of your own home.

One of the worries a lot of people have with filling out online credit card applications is the worry of it not being safe and secure.  But this shouldn't be a major concern anymore.  All the major credit card companies have secure software that prevents your information from being stolen.  Just make sure you go through a major credit card companies and do not give out your SSN or any other personal information through email.  The credit card companies will not ask for this type of information by email.  If they have to follow up with you, they will most likely phone you if they need sensitive information from you.  If they do request it in an email, I would suggest you reply by Phone instead of by email.

I think the benefits of online credit card applications are far superior to that of the regular mail credit card offers.  I do not think I would apply by regular mail for any type of credit cards now or in the future.
