Credit Card BillA lot of people in North American and across the world do not look at their credit card bills closely. In fact, many people do not even open their bills. They just transfer enough money to the account so they can make their payments. It seems all they are worried about is the balance and that they have made their payment. This is important but you need to do more. As with reading the fine print with your credit card applications, you need to make sure you carefully read your bill each and every month. You should be doing this for a couple of different reasons. The credit card companies do make mistakes and might have mistakenly charged you for something that you did not buy. They might have missed a payment you had previously made or your credit card number might have been stolen. A person can charge things to your account even if you still have your credit cards in your possession. If they have your account number and expiry date they can make purchases. As you fill out your credit card applications, you must realize there are certain things you are going to have to do each and every month to protect yourself once you get your credit cards. As you make purchases with your credit cards you should be ensuring that you save the receipts. Once you get home it is a good idea to keep them in a safe place until your bill comes. If you make any online purchases, print off the receipt and file it as well. Once your bill comes in the mail, you need to compare your bill and all the charges on it to the receipts. Do not worry if a company address or name is not 100% familiar if the amount and date of a purchase matches a receipt. Many companies bill from the corporate headquarters that might not be the same place as where you made your purchase. The corporate headquarters might not even be where you send your credit card applications or payments. Once you have gone through your bills and found no errors, all you have to do is make sure you pay it on time. If you have any errors on your bill at all, you need to contact the credit cards company as soon as possible. There should be a 24-hour toll free number on the back of the card. You will need to call them to dispute and charges not made by you. If you report a card stolen, you are no longer responsible for any charges it is used for. If it gets used before you report it, you are only liable for a maximum of $50 under federal law. For any charges on your credit cards that you did not make you might have to sign a statement under oath that you did not make those purchases. Remember, from the credit card applications to the statements you receive each month and everything in between. Make sure you read everything carefully and completely all the time and if you have any questions do not be afraid to call the credit card company.
